Crocodilly Mocs for Women - Free Pattern!

These fun moc style slippers have an added touch to the cuff. I’ve always liked the crochet version of the crocodile stitch, although this is not quite the same, it still offers a nice reptillian texture.Pattern calls for chunky yarn but you can use (I did) Dbl strands of worsted to get the same gauge. One word of caution, please take a look at the crocodile stitch video first so that you understand the stitches, as using double strands makes it a little harder to see them. (not too hard though). :)
A video reference is included so you can learn the crocodile stitch.
These knit up super fast! If you need a quick gift this is it.
I would rate this pattern between easy-intermediate.  Check my other postings, I have posted a version of this for newborns as well.

Enjoy!

  3. Hi, love the look of these and would like to try them just can't figure out if they are worked flat or in the round? Thanks so much, Sarah :)

  4. RE: Sarah Gallant,
Take a look at the pattern, always good to read thru it before starting. This is worked flat and then has one seam at the end.
    Have fun!

  7. I love the look of these, but am having trouble with the 3rd row of the foot, the number of stitches doesn't seem to add up? Is there a mistake, or maybe I'm not clear if you repeat just the previous stitch before the 2x direction, or ?

    ReplyDelete
  8. Annonymous,
There is no mistake. My best guess is perhaps you may not be making your ssk's correctly. I would go to youtube and search "ssk knitting" and watch a few videos to be sure you are making it correctly. I have had with other patterns, people don't really know what an ssk is so all they were doing was slipping one, slipping one, then knitting the next one rather than slip, slip, then you knit those two together making a decrease.

  9. Oh, thanks! That's what I was doing!

  10. Hi there! I love this pattern! I made a pair for myself and would like to make another for someone with larger feet. I am terrible at changing patterns at this point! I'm trying to make a pair in men's size 10.5, should I just add a set amount of stitches? Thank you in advance for any help!

  11. Annonymous,
I haven't tried making any larger sizes as of yet. I am meaning to rewrite in larger sizes but my list of "to-do" for pattern writing is huge! I would hate to take a guess and be wrong to waste your time. You may just have to make guess work, start with more stitches and make sure you not only make it longer but wider as well. Sorry I wish I could be of more help.

  12. Hi, I'm having the same problem as Anonymous, re the 3rd row of the foot. I end up with 21 stitches after sl1, k2tog, psso, k2tog 2x (2x means do it twice?). I've ssk 2x by slipping 2 and then knitting them together (twice?) but still end up with 21 sts not 24 to knit at the end. I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong. I'm knitting the small size. Please help! Thanks so much.

  13. Whomever,
    It says: Row 3: K24(26,27), ssk 2x, k3tog, k8(9,9), sl1, k2tog, psso, k2tog 2x, k24(26,27). [62(67,69)sts)

    I'll break it down:
You have 70 sts at the start of row 3 of the foot.
    First you k24
then you: ssk two times (-2 sts)
    then you k3tog (-2 sts)
    then you k8
    then you sl-1, k2tog, psso (-2 sts)
then you k2tog two times (-2 sts)
    then you knit 24.

The total number of stitches that you have decreased is 8.
    70-8 = 62.
The count is correct. You may want to make sure you know how to perform an ssk, and also the sl-1, k2tog, psso.

  14. What a lovely pattern! I look forward to having a pair of these to carry on my trip.
    Thank you!

  15. Is the gauge of 14 sts measured end to end and not top to bottom? I want to make sure my gauge is correct. Thanks

    ReplyDelete
  16. Dear Anonymous,
Whenever a knitting pattern refers to "sts" in the gauge they mean stitches across, right to left. When it says "rows" it means top to bottom. In this pattern I only refer to "sts" - so measure the number of stitches/stitch count you have right to left.

    :) Kris

  17. I am fairly new at knitting and I'm having trouble with line 27 on the foot. What do I do after 23 stiches in? I end up with 14 stiches on my left needle...
    Do I knit the rest?

    ReplyDelete
  18. Dear Heather Sweeney,
My guess is that you do not know how to perform an SSK which is a decrease. Perhaps google it and watch how to do it. if you have been doing it wrong then your numbers would be off.

    ReplyDelete
  19. All is good until foot row 7.

Making the xl suze so have 61 on needle as of Row 6.

Row 7 directions read: knit 35, ssk, turn.

PROBLEM: 24 Stitches remain on left needle. Total stitches on right needle DO NOT count to [60 sts] as pattern indicates.

    What am I missing?

    ReplyDelete
  20. Dear Betty Gavin,
When you turn, means you leave the remaining stitches unworked on that needle. This is called "short-rowing" you might want to youtube it and watch a couple videos if you haven't done this before. The stitch count of 60 means your total stitches that you should have if you counted all stitches (both needles). If your stitch count is off then perhaps you didn't decrease somewhere correctly. Also make sure you know what an SSK is, I get this question ALL the time if peoples stitch count is off because they don't know what an SSK is. It is a decrease.

  21. Do I absolutely need to learn the long tail cast-on for this projects or can I use my beloved knitted cast-on?

  22. Claire,
Knitted cast on is fine too. :)

  23. I would love to try this pattern . But trying to understand it it on round needle or is it knitted flat on two needles.? Thank you.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Dear Annonymous,
See directions are shown in "rows", not rounds. This is knit flat. I prefer to use circular needles for everything but you can use circs or regular needles -doesn't matter. Again, these are knit flat.

  25. Have made 3 pair the pattern us awesome! Have another pair requested by g.dau. nic

Must confess, I had to knit by faith. Thankful for your suggest that we look up short rows. Made it a lot easier. Also clarified the ssk stitch. Looking forward to a pattern for larger mocs. Thnx again!

  26. Can you please tell me if the yardage is based on using 1 strand of yarn (chunky yarn) or 2 strands (worsted yarn)? Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  27. Dear Anonymous,
Yardage is based on you are using 2 strands held together of worsted.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Hi Kris,
Thanks for this pattern. I love how quickly the slippers knit up. I found the crocodile stitch quite difficult,(video was excellent, by the way) but was good to try something new. I'm going to try a worsted weight yarn next, and smaller needles to see if I can make a pair for my cousin who has tiny feet :)

    ReplyDelete
  29. The pattern is awesome. Is it possible to get the same for 1-2 year olds?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Use thinner yarn and recommended needle size for yarn. Do a swatch to measure. If 14 st in stockinette gives you 2 ", then the slipper will be half as big.

  30. hi i am knitting the M/L ones and when i got to line 27 i only had 11 stitches instead of 13 stitches ,dont know why ? can you help please thanks

  31. HI Annonymous,
sounds like you probably did one extra set of the rows (lost your count maybe?), no worries, go back 2 rows and you'll be at the correct count.

  35. Help whats a place maker PM .. as

    ReplyDelete
  36. Dear Anonymous,
A place marker is anything that you slip on your needle, in a place to mark a spot in your knitting. There are plastic ones that are sold at JoAnns, Michaels, Hobby Lobby, Walmart, etc. Or you can use small plastic curtain rings, or you can simply make ones out of a contrasting yarn. There are people who make really cute or decorative ones out of just about everything. (look on Etsy).
